A flawless acrylic set can look perfect at the desk, then develop a tell-tale air pocket around the cuticle or sidewall days later. For a nail technician, that is more than a finish issue: lifting can affect retention, client confidence, refill timing and the reputation of every service leaving the salon. So, why do acrylic nails lift? Usually, it is not one dramatic mistake. It is a chain of small details – nail plate preparation, product control, application placement and client aftercare – that must all work together.

Why do acrylic nails lift at the cuticle?

Cuticle-area lifting is the most common complaint, and preparation is often at the centre of it. Acrylic needs a clean, dry, properly prepared nail plate to form a dependable bond. If non-living tissue remains on the plate, the enhancement attaches to that tissue rather than the natural nail. As the tissue sheds, the acrylic lifts with it.

This is why cuticle work deserves time and precision. Gently push back the proximal nail fold, remove only the non-living cuticle from the nail plate, and avoid aggressive scraping that can leave the natural nail sore or over-thinned. A clean nail plate should look even and matte after preparation, not scratched, fluffy or red around the skin.

Moisture and surface oils create the same problem. Hand cream, cuticle oil, sanitiser residue, dust and even a client touching their hair or face mid-service can compromise adhesion. After cleansing and dehydrating the nail, treat the plate as a no-touch zone. If you need to check it, use a clean tool rather than a fingertip.

The product must also stay clear of skin. Acrylic placed into the cuticle area, sidewalls or lateral folds has nowhere secure to bond. It may look smooth initially, but it can begin separating as the client uses their hands. Leave a fine, consistent margin around the skin and use the brush to guide the product close, not onto, the cuticle line. A neat perimeter is what gives a set its polished salon finish and its staying power.

Prep errors that weaken acrylic retention

Natural nails vary. Some clients have dry, rigid plates; others have flexible, oily nails or hands that are constantly in water. The core prep sequence remains consistent, but product choice and technique may need adjusting.

Start by assessing the nail, not assuming every client needs the same approach. Remove surface shine gently with a suitable grit, paying attention to the sidewalls and cuticle area without gouging the plate. Remove all filing dust thoroughly. Apply your dehydrator and primer system according to its directions, using a controlled amount rather than flooding the nail.

Too much primer can be as unhelpful as too little. Excess liquid may pool, touch the skin, or leave an uneven layer that affects the acrylic’s bond. Equally, do not mix systems casually. Primer, liquid and powder are formulated to work within a particular chemistry. Using products from different brands may occasionally appear fine at first, but it can make consistent retention far harder to achieve.

A nail plate that has been over-filed is not better prepared. It is weakened, more sensitive and may lose the smooth, stable surface needed for an even application. Professional prep is controlled, clean and repeatable – never rushed or heavy-handed.

The hidden issue: contamination between steps

Contamination often happens after a technically good prep. The client adjusts their mobile phone, applies lip balm, visits the bathroom or runs fingers through their hair. The technician changes gloves, touches a dusty file or rests a hand on an unclean workstation. These details matter.

Build hygiene into retention. Keep tools sanitised, work on a clean surface, brush dust away fully, and cleanse again if there is any doubt about contact or residue. This protects the service standard as well as the client.

Product ratio, bead control and structure

Acrylic that is too wet can shrink as it sets, run into the skin, or create a weak, porous structure. Acrylic that is too dry may not blend smoothly, leaving poor contact points and a finish that is prone to chipping. The correct bead should be workable, controlled and able to settle into place without flooding.

Liquid-to-powder ratio is a technical skill worth revisiting whenever lifting becomes a pattern. Watch the bead before it reaches the nail. Is it glossy and running? Is it grainy, dull or refusing to move? The answer can tell you more than the finished set. Use the manufacturer’s recommended liquid with the matching powder, keep the brush belly properly charged, and work with the bead while it is at the right stage of polymerisation.

Application thickness matters too. A set with no apex or stress-area support is more likely to flex and crack away from the natural nail. One that is excessively thick can feel bulky and put unnecessary pressure on the plate. The aim is a refined cuticle area, secure sidewalls, a balanced apex and a smooth transition at the free edge.

Do not chase a flat, painted-on appearance. Acrylic is a structural enhancement. The architecture should suit the length, shape and lifestyle of the client. A short square set for a busy healthcare worker needs a different balance from long almond extensions worn for occasions and content creation.

Lifting at the free edge and sidewalls

When lifting begins at the free edge, inspect your finishing technique and the client’s daily habits. The natural nail must be properly prepared right to the edge, and the acrylic needs to cover the area without leaving thin, exposed pockets. On extensions, ensure the tip is correctly fitted and blended before product application. A tip that is too small, too curved or poorly adhered can create stress that shows up later as lifting.

Sidewall lifting often points to insufficient prep, product touching the skin, or an application that has not fully connected to the sidewall area. It can also happen where a client’s nails are naturally flat, fan-shaped or prone to flexing. In these cases, careful tailoring of the extension shape and acrylic structure is more effective than simply adding extra bulk.

Over-filing during the finishing stage can also break the seal at the sidewalls or free edge. File with purpose: refine the structure, smooth the surface and perfect the shape, but do not file away the contact points you have just created.

Client lifestyle can change the result

Not all lifting is caused at the nail desk. Clients who regularly clean without gloves, work with hair products, handle solvents, garden, swim frequently or use their nails as tools place more stress on enhancements. This does not mean they cannot wear acrylics. It means the service and aftercare advice need to suit real life.

Ask practical questions at consultation. Are they a nail biter or picker? Do they work in hospitality, childcare, healthcare or hairdressing? Are their hands repeatedly washed or sanitised? Have they had lifting with other services, and where did it begin? These answers help you select a realistic length and shape, recommend a maintenance schedule, and identify habits that may undermine retention.

Clients should wear gloves for cleaning and gardening, avoid using nails to open packaging or scrape labels, and return for maintenance before the set becomes overgrown. Cuticle oil is still valuable around acrylic enhancements because it supports the surrounding skin and helps keep the natural nail flexible. The key is to apply it as aftercare, not immediately before an appointment.

When the issue is the natural nail

Some clients have nails that are unusually flexible, damaged from previous over-filing, or affected by medication, hormonal changes and health conditions. No product system can promise identical wear for every person. A technician’s job is to notice the pattern and make informed adjustments rather than repeating the same service and hoping for a different result.

For a client with recurring lifting, consider a shorter enhancement, a more supportive structure, a review of prep, and a slightly earlier rebalance appointment. Photograph the lifting at each visit and note its location. If it is always at the cuticle, review prep and skin contact. If it is consistently on one or two fingers, observe how that client uses those hands. If the whole set is lifting quickly, examine system compatibility, liquid-to-powder ratio and environmental conditions in the salon.

Never apply fresh acrylic over green discolouration, painful lifting, inflamed skin or a nail that appears compromised. Remove the enhancement safely, advise the client appropriately, and protect professional standards over a quick cover-up.
